Myths vs Facts: Metabolism Supplements
There is a great deal of misleading information about food supplements and metabolic health online. This page addresses the most common misconceptions with factual, evidence-based context.
"A supplement can guarantee you will lose a specific amount of weight."
No food supplement is authorised by EFSA or any UK regulatory body to claim it guarantees weight loss, body composition change or any specific measurable outcome. Any product making such a claim is in breach of Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006. Reputable supplements make only authorised nutrient-level claims. Individual results always vary based on diet, activity and lifestyle.
"All natural or plant-based supplements are completely harmless at any dose."
Plant extracts are included in food supplements at regulated, safe levels following food supplement manufacturing standards. Exceeding the recommended daily dose is not advised. If you take prescription medication, have a diagnosed health condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a qualified healthcare professional before taking any food supplement.
"Chromium supplements treat diabetes."
The EFSA-registered claim for Chromium states that it "contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels." This is a nutrient-level claim within the context of normal physiological function - not a therapeutic claim. Chromium in food supplement form is not authorised to treat, cure or prevent diabetes or any other condition. For health concerns about blood glucose, consult your GP.
"You need to detox or cleanse your body with supplements."
The concept of "detox" as sold in supplement marketing has no recognised scientific basis. The human body has its own effective systems for processing metabolic waste - principally the liver and kidneys. No food supplement is authorised to claim it detoxifies the body or removes toxins. Plant-based supplements may be included as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle but are not detoxification agents.
"High-dose B vitamins give you dramatically more energy."
B vitamins are water-soluble: the body uses what it requires and excretes the remainder. The EFSA-authorised claim is that B vitamins "contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism" and "the reduction of tiredness and fatigue" - at normal dietary levels. Megadosing beyond recommended amounts is neither necessary nor universally appropriate. The NRV percentages on the product label indicate the scientifically supported reference level.
"Food supplements are the same as medicines."
Food supplements are regulated as food products, not medicines. They are intended to supplement a normal diet and cannot be authorised to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Medicines are subject to a separate and much more rigorous regulatory process through the MHRA in the UK. If you require treatment for a health condition, consult a qualified healthcare professional.
